Just like the competing families of Florence, and those of Italy, Venetians and the Vatican, it is competition for power that drives industry and the massive investment necessary for the progress of Science (Hubbles don’t come cheap). America has borne the brunt of this drive for scientific progress in the last Century. The national debt of this continent will exceed $10 trillion in the next year making America the customer for about half of the world’s military purchases. around 10% of this level. The outcome is phenomenal, our homes, health’s and lifestyles are so full of expensive technology that we are too busy, surfing, downloading, shopping online or just viewing digitally transmitted entertainment that we forget to pay homage to the expensive defence related projects that spawned this technology; UK [the last Empire]: radar, jet technology, encryption (Bletchley Park) and US the modern empire]: the internet, nuclear
weapons and nuclear power generation including
drive for submarines and space satellite
vehicles. War is the driver of technology;
ironically those people seeking to maintain their
way of life are responsible for its wide scale
change; from the Renaissance families of Florence
to the Pentagon and their operations including
NASA’s perpetual collaborative experiments in
aerospace including the recent hypersonic engine
development program.

that artistic development is born out of conceptual
development. First Greek realism in temple
art followed by religious depiction in the abstract, abruptly progressed by realism, cubism, impressionism and now depiction of the human
form through photography on the internet, in what may well be known as the ‘Face Book’
era. Art and Science are inseparable, in the early 20th Century Scientific Literature,
Engineering and Science Research was written up in the same way as the Apocryphal
texts of lead to gold. It was written as I did this and I did that, now is it written as it was
done this way or that. Removing the individual from the action has opened the door for

modelling, through shear computer power to bring back 12th Century Baghdad
mathematics to solve huge amounts of equations far quicker than the human can.
At the heart of the Renaissance and of Art itself is the human struggle as to how we
should see ourselves, as subjects of the state, the Church, some Religion, or as individuals
existing in relation to each other as the Internet form of Art would suggest, perhaps best
exemplified in Face Book. In mosques there are few images to be found of people. In the
Western World on the contrary many people give little thought to their status as Believer
or Citizen yet alone to which form of government is preferable – State or Church.
The varying degrees of separation of the individual and their perception is a constant ebb
and flow throughout history. Cave Art goes back to the
time when humans seem to have mastered language,
some 50,000 years ago. Since then we have been
struggling with self-expression in all areas of creative
thinking; the sciences, humanities, classics, politics
and religion. Science and Engineering are no different;
some of the most interesting scientific events of
the last millennium are without explanation and certainly not widely in acceptance.
Trans-dimensional Ball lightning, cold fusion, room
temperature nuclear physics, the anomalous finding
from SETI - the Search for Extraterrestrial life and the
entire subject of Metaphysics to which all Monastic
Scholars were devoted for the first half of the last
Millennium. All of these points fall foul of Science’s
primary requirement that all Science should be
reproducible using the same equipment by different
people. The Renaissance that gave us Da Vinci and
Galileo was founded on the individual’s ability to be
creative. Modern Science has done away with the
individual and therefore offers people no insight in
matters of human significance; religion and metaphysics. If there is a malaise amongst
the people for Science, seen by most only as a shortage of Math’s Teachers. Might I
suggest that a potential solution lies in the reunification of the Science with the
Individual. As is being debated recently that at the fundamental level the human brain
is a quantum device and if that is true, where does that leave the concept of reproducibility
when the result can be both positive and negative at the same time. As in the case of
SETI the designers of the experiment should have realised that such a fortuitous communication
from the Stars could only be the result of a one-off alignment of the heavens and
by definition non-reproducible. Are we limiting science with the demands of neutrality,
objectivity and reproducibility? |
