 Glass Damage Research
A windscreen chip can turn into a crack more than 80 per cent of the time
Groundbreaking new research has concluded that a windscreen chip can have, on average, more than an 80 per cent chance of developing into a crack when a vehicle is being driven in normal winter conditions, which are common to many countries.
The dramatic findings resulted from tests commissioned by industry expert Belron® (parent company of Autoglass® in the UK) and carried out by Swansea Metropolitan University in a climatic wind tunnel at MIRA, the global centre of excellence for automotive engineering in Warwickshire.
The results were announced at a major international competition, 'Best of Belron 2008' by leading vehicle glass expert,
Dr Chris Davies, Head of Technical Research and Innovation at Belron Technical.
He said: “It has always been thought that if a windscreen chip was not repaired, then in normal winter driving conditions it would develop into a crack that would require the replacement of the whole windscreen. We really wanted to test this theory under rigorous scientific conditions, and so we commissioned Dr Gw na lle M Daniel, Research Associate at Swansea Metropolitan University to help us.
“Dr Daniel carried out experiments where two chips were made in a windscreen - one was repaired (without the windscreen being replaced) by injecting a resin into the damage and the other was left untouched.
“We then replicated normal winter driving conditions, which are common to many countries, using a climatic wind tunnel at MIRA. During 88 separate tests the un-repaired chips grew into a larger, non-repairable crack on 71 occasions. None of the repaired chips became cracks.
What this highlights is the importance of repairing a windscreen chip as soon as possible. Repair is a simple, cost effective and environmentally friendly option. If the chip is left, there is a very high risk that it will develop into a crack in normal winter driving conditions and the whole windscreen will then need replacing.”
 2008 Best of Belron Winner
Winner Nick Nieuwenhuize (Holland)
Twenty-five highly skilled technicians from four continents battled it out to win the title 'Best of Belron 2008'. Belron is the parent company of Carglass® in Europe, Autoglass® in the UK and Safelite® in the USA.
Each competitor had already pitted their abilities against technicians in their own country and won both the regional heats and national finals.
They were now competing against an international line-up, and were tasked with fitting a vehicle windscreen, replacing glass from a side door and repairing a chipped windscreen using Belron's best practice tools and equipment.
The judging panel were looking for each competitor to demonstrate their superior technical and customer service skills to be crowned 'Best of Belron 2008' and win the top prize of a year's salary
