Steel Post
remains
upright for
better Road Safety

Dura-Post Reflex
is a new reflector post
for roads and can withstand
impact by a vehicle
without being damaged.
This is because
it is made of
an advanced high strength steel
and has a foldable form.

A simple reflector post made of advanced high strength steel and of an ingenious form may become an important element for improving road safety around the world. The post has been developed in Australia by Dura-Post Pty. Ltd. and is used as guide posts along roads. The post can withstand impact by vehicles without sustaining damage.

The new post from Dura-Post is of neat, dished design and is made of thin, advanced cold-rolled high strength steel. The material is only 1.2 millimetres thick and, in spite of being thin, the new post can withstand impact by vehicles. This is due to the high springback properties of the high strength steel, combined with the dished profile. When struck by a vehicle, the post simply folds out of the way and then rises again.
Important to road safety
Reflector posts that clearly show the boundary of the road are an important road safety element around the world. Both in darkness and under poor visibility conditions in daytime, reflector posts contribute to safer conditions for road users. Guide posts are in widespread use along the Australian road network of around 900 000 km.
”Many posts are needed in such a large country,” says Ralph Norton, Managing Director of Dura-Post Pty. Ltd. ”In addition to being used along the roads, the posts are also used on roundabouts and at road intersections.”
Reduced maintenance costs
The new post is codenamed Dura-Post Reflex. The steel used for the post has a very high minimum tensile strength of 1400 MPa. Due to its form, the post is very simple to install along the roadside. The work takes only a couple of minutes, and the company has produced special installation tools. The great saving offered by the Dura-Post Reflex is due to the reduced maintenance needs. Impact damage is otherwise common, and mown-down posts demand regular work, which is substantially reduced by the Dura-Post Reflex. The reaction to the new post has been very positive during the period of just over one year that it has been in production.
”The post is used in Australia and New Zealand, and we are on the brink of a breakthrough in Malaysia," reveals Scott Payton, Sales and Marketing Manager at Dura-Post Pty. Ltd.
Several European countries have shown interest in the Dura-Post Reflex, including Sweden, Denmark, United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain.
”Side marking of this type is common in Europe, and anyone who has seen our new post quickly realizes the benefits,” explains Ralph Norton.
Further product ideas
The posts are now produced manually, but due to the successes, the possibility of automating production is being considered. The opportunities offered by advanced high strength steels have also triggered idea work, and new products are being discussed at Dura-Post.
”Our posts can easily be linked to various types of signs, for which an advanced high strength steel could offer new opportunities,” concludes Ralph Norton. ”Signs made of an advanced high strength steel would be capable of withstanding impact by vehicles and physical damage much better than today's signs made of much softer materials.”
Dura-Post Pty. Ltd. has its operations on the Australian islands of Tasmania, just over an hour's flying time south of Melbourne. This is where product development and production are carried out. The company was founded in 1995 and now has around 20 employees.
