Former technical director of Lotus Engineering Malcolm McDonald leads the development of teaching in engine technology and analysis in the School and has recently been joined by Dr Mark Ellis from Cosworth Racing to teach in this important area of study.

In addition to a detailed theoretical analysis students are able to carry out investigative assignments on the latest technology engines provided by the Ford Motor Company at the nearby Bridgend plant. Detailed dimensional measurements and flow analysis using a Superflow flow bench gives students a thorough understanding of engine design. Ricardo WAVE a 1-D engine simulation package enables students to simulate an automotive or motorsport engine and importantly requires these models to be validated with a combination of classical analysis and engine test data provided by industrial partners. GT Power is also used for similar work.

Undergraduates have the opportunity to choose their own final year projects and a large number elect to carry out advanced engine

projects which are often carried out with industrial partners. Such partnerships are mutually rewarding for both the students and industrial partners.
